Holiday Mini Sessions by Photosmith, Cincinnati, Ohio

Here are some of the photos that came out of the holiday mini sessions. We are currently making plans for our Springtime Artist's Choice Mini Sessions. We will announce a day soon and have some preview pictures to show. The sessions will be here in our studio. We are thinking of props and scenarios to add to the shoots. For the winter holidays, we had some hats, presents, lights, a santa suit and an antique sled. We used a few sock monkeys in the photos, not that sock monkeys are really synonymous with the holidays, but they do evoke a sense of fun and nostalgia. Right now we are looking at some fabrics to make into backgrounds. Thinking about flowers and springtime is like a distant dream during these cold days! Spring will be here soon, though!

Emily and Ben

Here are a few photos from the engagement shoot of Emily and Ben taken in late December. I love the hats! Winter photos can be fun, too. We haven't had too much snow this year, but Brad has used snow in the past to make some really fun pictures of people making snow angels. Another option if you want winter photos but don't want to go outside, is to come in for a studio session. Another great place to make photos is the Krohn Conservatory--lots of green, a waterfall, it's summer all year round. If you have another place that is special to you, we are always open to new places. We've shot in parks, bars, under a highway overpass, the ballparks, the river, industrial areas, homes. Some places do require permission (such as the ballparks) but sometimes all you have to do is ask. These photos were taken at Eden Park near the overlook and Twin Lakes. This is a great place. Eden Park has so much photographic diversity with city views, a stone bridge, plant life, river views.

The New Year

Everyone at Photosmith had a great holiday season and hope you and your families did as well. We were able to have a few days off to enjoy being with our family and friends, but we stayed busy with mini sessions and portrait shoots. We were so pleased with the results of the Holiday Artist's Choice mini sessions and were very excited about the response to it. Soooo, we decided to offer mini sessions year round for $100. We are going to be offering another special Artist's Choice mini session day in the spring and the sessions will be $75. We should be selecting a date soon and will keep the blog followers and Facebook followers updated. If you haven't already "liked" our Facebook page, check it out. We do client appreciation contests on Facebook and announce a lot of our specials there.

We are excited to meet with newly engaged couples and are looking forward to this wedding season. We have some great venues to look forward to shooting in and fun couples to work with.

In other news, Brad Smith of Photosmith is preparing for an art exhibition he is having in March at the Weston Art Gallery. The opening is March 30th and is open to the public. Come on out and say hi! It should be fun. Brad is showing his series called "Drive By," a series of photos he shot from his 1960 Buick LeSabre. It's a slice of life, capturing the moment body of work. The artist statement is way better. I should post it...Maybe closer to the opening I will do just that. In all seriousness, Brad is grateful for the opportunity to show in such a wonderful space and had a great time making this photographic series.

Thank you to everyone who chose Photosmith as their photographer in the past year (and even well before that). We genuinely appreciate working with our clients and love to form lasting relationships, both as clients and friends. We wish everyone a fabulous 2012!

Brad photographed Faith Cole and her mother, Kim, when Faith was just a little girl. This past Saturday, he photographed Faith again as she and Travis wed at the Miami Boat Club in Ohio. A beautiful fall day was the backdrop for the outdoor ceremony, with friends and family coming from all over the world. Last Saturday, Brad shot Rebecca and Ryan's wedding at their family estate in Union. The ceremony was held under a floral archway in front of the home and the reception took place in a giant event tent in the fields. With a beautiful setting and a gorgeous sunset, the day looked spectacular. Rebecca's gown had elegant details and the bridesmaids wore the contemporary one shoulder dresses. Brad said he saw at least three couples at this wedding whose weddings we had photographed. Thanks for the referrals, ladies, we always appreciate it! Kelly and Antonin married last weekend at York Street International Cafe. This couple was loads of fun and the Cafe was a perfect match for their personal diverse style. They got married in the courtyard and food and drinks were served in the lower level of the Cafe. Meredith and Brian married at Bellermine Chapel on Saturday. What a beautiful sunshine-y day after several days of rain. (Well, ok, it did drizzle some, but all in all, a good day!) When the ceremony was over, we went to Eden Park for a few pictures and then up to Crowley's in Mount Adams with the wedding party. That's where the couple met, if I'm remembering correctly. The reception was at the Syndicate in Newport. They had a cupcake tower instead of one big cake and an entire table of homemade cookies for their guests. It sounded like Meredith's mom and several family members and friends had been busy in the kitchen making these cookies for the big day. Amazing! They also had a photo booth for their guests. I love photo booths. I wish I had one in my house, but where would I put it? What a fun day for a fun couple! Here are just a few shots from their day.

Katy and Brett's wedding by Photosmith

Saturday morning, Brad and Suz took a nice little trip up I75 to Botkins, Ohio for the wedding of Katy and Brett. Brad shot Katy's brother, Michael's wedding in 2005. I believe Michael and Lisa's wedding was the last wedding to take place at Old St. George in Cincinnati. Michael and Lisa now have two adorable children. The eldest is pictured below. Back to Katy and Brett. If you don't know where Botkins is located, it is near Wapakoneta, birthplace of the legendary Neil Armstrong. Interesting that Ohio was the birthplace to the first man to step foot on the moon and one of the Wright Brothers, who built the first airplane. I digress, again. Katy and Brett's wedding ceremony took place at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Parish in Botkins. The sanctuary was beautifully decorated with flower arrangements adorning the ends of every pew. After a round-the-block getaway in a red convertible Corvette, the couple came back for a few family photos and then the party bus took the wedding party to the park for a few fun shots. Katy and Brett and their wedding party were fun to work with, playfully posing for photos on the playground nearby. The experience of shooting somewhere new is always fun. Their reception was held at Palazzo in Botkins, and Carl, the coordinator for Palazzo was a super nice guy to work with. Katy and Brett had a candy bar set up with lots of purple and cream colored candies for their guests to take. I had to eat one of the jordan almonds - one of my all time favorite candies. Jennifer and Eric's wedding

Jennifer and Eric married on the third of July. The ceremony and reception took place at Beckett Ridge Country Club. The bridesmaids wore pink dresses with black sashes and the groomsmen pink ties and white suspenders over black button up shirts. Eric later changed into black and white chucks for the reception. I wish I had thought to do this for my own wedding. Jennifer's dress was adorned with an intricate pattern of crystals which overlaid a pink sash to add just a slight pop of color to the dress. In memory of her mother, she had a locket with her mother's photo attached to her rose bouquet. It's little details like this which truly make every wedding unique and personal. The DJ got everyone up and moving and the dance floor was lively all night. Since it was a holiday weekend wedding, guests were also able to enjoy fireworks from the porch at Beckett Ridge. The evening ended with a sparkler send off and floating lanterns. Here are a few pics from their day. --Brad

Raegan and Daniel married on the second of July. A very festive wedding celebration was held at a private residence in Fort Thomas. Raegan's dress had a pale blue sash and the Daniel wore a red, white and blue bow tie, both fitting for a fourth of July weekend celebration. The bridesmaids looked fabulous in red dresses accented with white chrysanthemum bouquets and the groomsmen wore white shirts with red pin stripes. Very chic but also very weather appropriate. Red and blue paper lanterns were hung throughout the yard and the event tent and the evening's festivities included dancing, marshmallow roasting, smores making and fireworks. The whole vibe of the wedding was a big summer party where everyone was having a great time. You have to love a wedding where someone unexpectedly brings moonshine. (Unless that's illegal, in which case it was most likely just water in a mason jar. Very strong water.) Here are a few pics from their special day! -Brad

Jen and Chris's wedding

Jen and Chris married over the holiday weekend. Suz and Kathy started the photography portion of the day with some candid getting ready shots. The guys were hanging at Chris's parents' house having some pre-wedding pizza. The ladies were getting pampered with hair and make-up sessions (make-up by Nancy from Brideface, check out Jen's flawless look!) at Jen's aunt and uncle's house. The adorable flower girl was Jen's niece. She nicknamed Kathy "Silly Kathy" for giving me bunny ears during the family shots. (It's a little trick we use to get kids to look at the photographer.) Jen chose a seersucker dress for the bridesmaids to wear, which I'm sure was appreciated during the heat of the midwest July day. The richly colored summer bouquets added a bold pop of color against the lightly colored dresses. We later went to Alexandria City Park and Camp Springs Vineyard for more photos with the wedding party. We all took a few minutes to refresh and cool down once we arrived at St. Joseph in Cold Spring. Having seen each other before the wedding, there were only one or two "formal" photos to do after the ceremony and then it was on to Memorial Hall in Cold Spring, which is a separate building, but affiliated with St. Joseph. As I heard in the toast, the couple's first date was at Pompilio's so it was very romantic (and delicious) that Pompilio's catered the reception. Here are just a few pics from their day. -Suz

Mary and Cory by Photosmith, Cincinnati Wedding Photographer

Mary and Cory married on Saturday at St. Cecelia in Oakley. This was a unique wedding for Photosmith, because Brad and Menad of Photosmith photographed the wedding and Suz from Photosmith was in it! In fact, other family members were in the wedding too, including Brad and Suz's daughter, Sienna. I guess it is obvious that we know Mary and Cory personally, and we are so happy for them as they begin married life. Photos started at Ault Park. We were lucky to get the garden spot we wanted. Two other wedding parties were spotted at Ault on that day. It is a gorgeous place for photos. Mary and Cory rode over to the church in Brad's 1960 Buick LeSabre, coincidentally of similar color to the bridesmaids dresses. After a lovely ceremony, everyone headed over to Southgate Community Center. It is a great space with lots of natural light coming in from two walls of windows. Dancing started right away and paused only briefly for dinner and a few toasts. Fathead Davis provided entertainment for the evening. Mary and Cory have lots of friends and family and we were all happy to celebrate with them that night! Best Wishes!

Amanda And Philip

Amanda and Philip got married on Friday night. The ceremony and reception were especially unique and personal since they were held on Amanda's grandfather's farm in Verona, KY. Lots of beautiful details including candlelit glass jars, tasty treats including cupcakes and gourmet lollipops, even Kermit the Frog made an appearance. Instead of a traditional guest book, Amanda and Philip had a large drawing of a leafless tree that guests would personalize with their signature and fingerprint. Each fingerprint would form the leaves. (hand wipes were available.) This was such a cute idea and one I had never seen before. Here are a few sneak peaks from their wedding.

Angela and Curtis's wedding and reception on the Purple People Bridge!

Pictures started at Angela and Curtis's house in Newport. Their sweet boxer dog was hanging out on the porch when we arrived. We took some photos of the guys around the house before heading over to the Sanctuary to meet Angela. Angela and the ladies in her family wore red shoes that day in memory of her grandmother, who loved the color red. Angela and Curtis saw each other before the ceremony, a quiet moment in the stairwell of the sanctuary. It makes our job easy when a couple is so relaxed and natural with each other. Angela and Curtis's friend Jake officiated the ceremony. A sure sign of the modern era, Jake's notes for the ceremony were on what appeared to be an ipad. The wedding party walked to the reception site after the ceremony. I was told that The Penicks had the first wedding reception ever on the Purple People Bridge. Lots of personal touches were incorporated into the decorations, many of which reflected the couple's love of travel. Personally, I really love when all the centerpieces are similar in style, but use all different vessels and flowers. At each table, there was placed a small notepad and a big glass bottle. Guests were to leave the couple a message in the bottle - a fun alternative to the traditional type of guest book. I wish I knew who provided DJ services for the wedding. I meant to ask him, but there was so much going on, I forgot. He did a great job keeping people engaged and I really liked the music he played. It wasn't music I hear at a lot of receptions, so it leads me to believe that he worked with the couple to meet their personal taste in music. (which I personally enjoyed, as well. :) ) With delectable appetizers and food stations by Eat Well, a fabulously managed event by Events by Ellyn, elegant bouquets by Robin Wood, and an overall great crowd, this was a beautiful, fun, and memorable evening all around. Super fun couple! Here are just a few pics from their day.

The Wedding of Sara and Tony by Brad from Photosmith

Sara and Tony had a gorgeous Saturday wedding last week. They started pictures at the Freedom Center and from there we continued on to Great American Ballpark and Mt. Echo before heading to St. William's Church for the ceremony. The guys had fun in the Reds' shop with the giant foam hands. The ladies opted for a nature setting for their photos and the green lawns and hills of Mt. Echo were perfect for this. St. William's is a gorgeous church. (The altar happens to be Suz's favorite Catholic Church altar, as a side note.) There is no denying the beautiful stained glass and stately stone architecture. Before heading to the Cincinnati Club for the reception, the wedding party and the bride and groom stopped at Fountain Square for a few fun quick pics. The reception was elegantly set when we arrived, and it seemed as though everyone was having a great time celebrating with the bride and groom.

The wedding of Tonya and Benjamin by Brad from Photosmith

Tonya and Benjamin got married last Friday at the Carillon Historical Park in Dayton. The park is situated on 65 acres between the Great Miami River and a glacial moraine. Inside one of the buildings is the original 1905 Wright Flyer III, the first practical airplane. This was a beautiful setting for wedding and reception. Originally, the ceremony was set to take place outside, but due to rain, it was moved indoors. The room had lots of beautiful glass windows which gave the indoor ceremony an open and airy feeling. Tonya and her bridesmaids were dressed in modern one shoulder dresses. The bridesmaids wore silver and the groomsmen wore classic tuxes. An elegant couple and unique venue! The wedding of Brooke and Ben by Suz from Photosmith

You may remember the torrential downpours that occurred last Friday. Those rains will definitely be unforgettable to Brooke and Ben and their wedding guests. Their outdoor ceremony was postponed for over an hour! At one point several family members were holding down the tent to keep it from taking off. Every time a big wind gust pushed the rain through, a big gasp would erupt from the crowd. Umbrellas and blankets were retrieved from the depths of cars, families cuddled together to stay warm. When plan b was put into action, the seats were moved to what I call dinner theatre style. Everyone stuck it out to support this couple and see them get married. Brooke and Ben were so easy going and go with the flow. They didn't let the rain get them down, and I never heard them complain one time. As Ben's mom said, "The wedding day doesn't make a marriage." When the ceremony did begin, the twilight cast a beautiful soft tone on the pavilion of Mt. Echo, and the ground became like a reflective pool. Brooke and Ben had the support of all their friends and family, and there was truly a warm spirit of love and fun that surrounded this couple on their unforgettable wedding day. Shauna and Brent married on the third of June at St. Xavier in downtown Cincinnati. They had an elegant evening at the Bell Event Center. A beautiful cake came from Bakery Hill (I think), and the wedding party's gorgeous flowers were from Eden Floral Boutique. DJ Moglee provided music for the reception. Monica and David's Wedding by Brad from Photosmith

Every week we feature a few pictures from weddings we shoot. Last year, I did a few theme blogs in which each entry focused on kids, details, or candid pictures, etc. I haven't done a theme blog in a little while, so for Monica and David's wedding I'm featuring a few of my favorite pictures from their wedding and why I like them. I wasn't at this wedding, but I am working on editing it. As I went through the images, some stood out to me for any number of reasons. Here are a few that did, and why I like them.

above: Simple, beautiful portrait of the couple with great natural smiles.

above: This is just an example of candid shots Brad took of the guests. I really loved having pictures of all the guests at my wedding. I chose this one because the man is waving and that made me laugh.

above: I like the snail's perspective Brad used for this dance shot and the texture of the brick in the foreground. This is an easy way to add variety to your own pictures. Usually works best without a flash.

above: This shot just seems so tender to me. This was the couple's first dance, and even though they are at a big party with everyone watching them, it really seems like they were able to experience the romance of the first dance and simply be totally into each other. AWWW!

above: This picture shows off the B&B where the reception was held. I like the sense of place, and the curvilinear rhythm created by the walkway --it makes your eye flow through the picture.

above: I used the os effect on this picture to make it seem old school (which is what os stands for!) This picture shows off the back of her dress and hair. It seems timeless to me.

above: This picture I chose because that cake looks amazing. One of the most gorgeous cakes I have ever seen!

above: guests having fun at the reception. I like the documentary nature of this picture but mostly I really like the posture of the second guy from the right. So chill!

It's us! As stick figures! Sweet natural moment looking at how their car has been decorated.

above: This is a picture you probably see quite a bit on the blog. I'm quite fond of this set up with this effect called "pool." (Short for Pool Party) By the way, I don't make up the names of the effects, that is honestly what they are called when we buy them. Kathy from Photosmith first applied this effect to this type of shot and I was really wowed by it.

above: portrait of the couple. I like the flow of the veil, and even though it may seem silly, I really like that pinkish tree in the background. To me it sets up what time of year it is.

above: LOL I don't know what's going on, but it's funny and totally unscripted.

I chose this pic to show off how each lady had a unique dress and bouquet. I love that concept!

above: I know this picture is probably posed and someone is holding that veil, but I like the line the veil creates. It adds interest and fills the space of the composition.

above: I would guess that this was when Brad was shooting bridal portraits, but this particular moment seems unscripted to me. It seems like Monica was a go with the flow kind of bride.

above: most likely meant to be a close up of the flowers but Brad shot a little wide and caught a few of the bridesmaids laughing. Happy accident.

above: The wedding party. This is my favorite set up for larger wedding parties. I like that it's casual and close so you can see everyone's face.

above and below: I think these are nice examples of the photojournalism style. So full of expression and meaning and completely candid.

Sisters Ruby and Gertie came in for a summer photo shoot today. Brad photographed their parents' wedding several years back and their Aunt Molly's wedding just a couple of weeks ago. It's always fun to see how the family grows! Ruby was sporting her kitty cat wellies. My guess is that she remembers all that rain we had and wants to be prepared! I think that's a fun time when your child starts to choose her own outfits and a really great mom that lets her. Here are a few photos from their shoot.

Molly and Benjamin married on the 21st. Photosmith has been fortunate enough to shoot the weddings of all three of the Beck sisters. Each of these three women had beautiful weddings and each one unique. Molly and Benjamin got married under the gazebo at Lake Lyndsay. Molly and her dad pulled up to the ceremony site in Mr. Beck's classic red Corvette. Friends were a big part of the ceremony, giving readings and even officiated the ceremony. The wedding party was dressed in classic tuxedos and indigo dresses. At the reception, the couple had a brownie cake! Instead of what you might think of as a traditional wedding cake, this couple chose a tiered platter with brownies. That's my kind of cake. The only thing better would be pie. Cherry with a good cup of hot coffee. Mmmm.... Here are a few pictures from Saturday.

Megan and Tony were married this past Saturday in an outside ceremony at Nathanael Greene Lodge. The forecast called for rain throughout the day, but that didn't let that stop them! When it was time to make the call whether or not to move the ceremony inside, Megan said they were going to go for it! Go big or go home, right? The rain held out for Megan's stroll down the aisle.

It started to rain right as they were finishing up their vows. It didn't phase Megan and Tony at all. They were so focused on each other; it was ridiculously romantic!

Katie and Murray had a truly lucky wedding day rain on Saturday. All the luck of rain on their wedding day, plus it only rained when they weren't outside! Katie and Murray were great to work with and such a classy couple. You can see that Katie is ahead of what will surely be the new fashion trend thanks to Princess Kate Middleton: lace and sleeves. Though our Katie's dress is technically sleeveless, it still maintains the same kind of timeless look and elegance. Katie and Murray married at the beautiful St. Xavier and their reception was held at the Cincinnati Club. Murray is the fourth Monroe that Photosmith has provided photography services for. We always feel honored when family and friends refer us. Best wishes to this couple from everyone at Photosmith!

Photosmith makes a step toward being greener

Everyone that works at Photosmith wants to be a little bit greener. We've been recycling our soda cans and bottles, among other things, for a long time now. Recently, we just bought a flash drive to reduce the number of cds we use for each wedding. Now, when we take images to the proofing lab, we have one reusable drive instead of several single use cds. It's one small step we have taken to be a little bit greener. Next, Suz wants to invest in a power strip that cuts off all power to the computers over night so nothing is wasted through vampire energy. Katie and Murray are getting married in May. (Which is just around the corner! Very ready for more temperate weather!) This engagement session was done at the Krohn Conservatory and around Eden Park. The Krohn just opened their annual butterfly show, btw. The skies were a little drab, but we were able to get some great color at the Krohn and in a few tulip blooms around town. Kendra and Brandon had a two day wedding celebration. On Friday, they got married at the Leapin Lizard Gallery in Covington in the MainStrasse Village. It's a cool space that serves as both an art gallery and event venue. The building was a church in its former life in the late 1800's. Since then, it has been renovated on all three levels, but still maintains some of the original stained glass windows and an enormous pipe organ. Kendra and Brandon were married by one of their best friends which made it even more special and personal. After the official ceremony on Friday, a small group of family and friends went to Dee Felice (one of Brad's favorite places to go for music, incidentally.) On Saturday, the festivities continued at the Leapin Lizard with a larger group of friends and family. They had all kinds of food including mini burgers, creme brule, and a cupcake tower. The maid of honor performed an original song she had written for the bride and groom. After that, there were two bands, The Downtown County Band and Doghouse. A good time was had by all. Photographers by day, chili cook-off winners by night

Technically, we won the chili cook-off by day as well, but that didn't have a good ring to it. Brad and I entered the Gold Star chili cook-off yesterday. We entered with our Chipotle veggie chili and won second place! Brad's name was mentioned on Fox 19 news and I was shown serving up chili on WLWT 5. Lol! I can't say I looked very good, but it was fun to be on tv anyway. For the most part, we'll stick to being photographers, but we are both excited to have placed in our first chili cook-off.

Janelle and Robert started out the new year by getting married. The ceremony was held and Bethany Chapel and the reception at the Phoenix. We took some pictures around Garfield Park, too, since the weather wasn't too bad (and by that, I mean not too bad for Cincinnati winters). Light sabers appeared suddenly while we were in Garfield Park. I guess the Force brought them there, and that was good because they made for some fun pictures.
